That would be Harry Caul, from Francis Ford Coppola's " The Conversation" (1974). I was reminded of another Gene Hackman character named Harry. Harry doesn't understand, that's for sure, and the last shot in the film, taken from high above, shows him in a boat that is circling aimlessly in the Gulf Stream, a splendid metaphor for Harry's investigation. Something is always turning up to force him to revise everything he thought he knew, and then at the end of the film he has to revise everything again, and there is a shot where one of the characters, while drowning, seems to be desperately shaking his head as if to say - what? "I didn't mean to do this"? "I didn't know who was in the boat"? "In the water"? "You don't understand"? The plot can be understood, but not easily, and not on first viewing, and besides, the point is that Moseby is as lost as we are. Of course, we could fall back on the old filmcrit ploy, "we're not supposed to understand the plot." That worked for " Syriana." But in "Night Moves," I think it's a little trickier. I saw it a week ago with an audience at that holy place of the cinema, George Eastman House in Rochester, N.Y., and then I was joined in a discussion with Jim Healy, the assistant curator - we talked for an hour with a room full of moviegoers and we were left with more questions than we started with. It is probably true that if you saw "Night Moves" several times and took careful notes, you could reconstruct exactly what happens in the movie, but that might be missing the point. Now we have most of the characters on board, and I will stop describing the plot, not so much because I fear giving it away as because I fear I cannot. In Florida, Moseby finds her (played by Melanie Griffith in her movie debut) living with Tom and Tom's lover, Paula ( Jennifer Warren). His trail leads first to a movie location, where he meets a mechanic ( James Woods) who once dated Delly, and then a stunt pilot ( Anthony Costello) who took her away from the mechanic, and then a stunt pilot who says Delly is probably in Florida with her stepfather, the charter pilot Tom Iverson (John Crawford). The man is Marty Heller ( Harris Yulin), who lives out in Malibu, and later Harry confronts him, although in a curiously lukewarm way: "How serious is it?" When his wife finds out he knows, she makes it his fault: "Why didn't you ask me first?" He leaves town to work on the case as a sort of therapy. It was kinda like watching paint dry." Then he stakes out the theater and sees her meeting a man Harry doesn't know. His wife, Ellen ( Susan Clark), asks if he wants to go see " My Night at Maud's," but he tells her, "I saw a Rohmer film once. Harry takes the job but first does a little sleuthing on his own time. Her 16-year-old daughter, Delly, has run away from home, and she wants Harry to find her, although if Harry wants to have a drink with Arlene first, that would be nice. Arlene Iverson ( Janet Ward) is a onetime B-movie sweater girl who married a couple of rich guys - one dead, the other ex - and must be lonely, because she greets Harry dressed as if she's hired him to look at her breasts. As the movie opens, he is summoned to the kind of client who would be completely at home in a Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe story.

I always have been and always will be.You will receive gratitude when you begin each day with a spirit of gratitude. This morning, I received two presents.I enjoy my mornings bright and my coffee dark.see the possibilities that each day presents. When you begin each day, start with a spirit of gratitude. The morning's key and the evening's bolt are prayers.Even if every day may not be ideal, there is always some positive aspect. You have to make your sun shine even brighter today!.Good morning! I hope you have a happy day.Photo: Maryna Terletska (modified by author) These are some of the best short good morning quotes with heavy meaning. Sincere relationships are like water they have no flavour, colour, or shape, but they are nonetheless vital to life. The rest of the day will go as planned if you are polite up until ten in the morning. People who wake up in search of money frequently drive by wealth en route and fail to see it.Tomorrow's beautiful memories will come from today's beautiful moments. May wisdom remove our ignorance just as light dispels darkness.Continue sharing positive messages wherever you go. Possibly two coffees, followed by more kindness. But remember that the opposite side is also waiting for a chance. The two sides are pleasure and suffering.
Kobo, in fact, has aĭedicated freebie page, which offers various genres of free titles by (unknown, at least to us) modern authors on top of the expected classics section. Of course, both the Kobo and Kindle stores offer free books of their own. Drag-and-drop the ePub into the folder and it will be readable the next time you turn the Forma on. The Kobo Forma, however, does support ePub, and side-loading them is a breeze: connect it to your computer (we used a Mac) using the supplied cable and it will appear like a USB drive. Kindles do not currently support the ePub format, so you’ve got to convert them first. Project Gutenberg of free ePub copies of out-of-copyright classics, but Kindles – for obvious reasons – do not make it easy for you to side-load such titles on to your device. One of the appeals of eReaders for fuddy-duddies like this reviewer (bah, it’s not the same as an actual book, etc) is the wide availability on sites such as Very few of us will receive astute recommendations when we first visit the Kobo store.Ī quick word on the subject of free books. This means data, and data means user-targeted recommendations. Of course Amazon benefits from its ubiquity and sheer size, since a lot of potential users will have bought something from it before. Books – a market with absurd oversupply and deeply subjective tastes – cry out for human or personal-data-driven guidance. Inoffensive stuff, and probably just bad (or good) luck, but also a hint that Kobo does not curate the front pages of its categories and leaves them to sales algorithm or simple recentness. We again checked Short Stories, and funnily enough happened across another suggestive offering at the bottom of the front page, this time calledĮat Me For Lunch (“ the steamy story of an attractive young nurse who is starved for sex…”). The store is more attractive than before and we found it easier to find decent stuff, although it’s still less helpful than the Kindle store. Things seem to have improved, at least a little, but the issues haven’t been entirely solved. Little thought had gone into the store’s user experience and, disconcertingly, a couple of cheaply made soft-porn titles appeared on the front page of the Short Stories section. Kobo store simply wasn’t as well curated asĪmazon’s Kindle store: a little searching suggested it had as many or almost as many books on offer, and big titles launched there at roughly the same time, but it was much harder to browse. Kobo fell down in our review last year when we pronounced the dreaded word ‘content’. Of course, if you’re reading something embarrassing you may not share our view. It’s nice to have a small extra link with the book, and it makes you feel more immersed. On multiple occasions eBook-using friends have sheepishly admitted to us that they don’t actually know what they are currently reading because they never get to see the cover, as they would with a physical book. Some may find the latter limitation annoying, but we love the default setting. But we suspect that at least some users will find the hair-trigger auto-rotation annoying, and would appreciate a third setting for total lock in a single orientation.īy default, the Kobo uses the cover of your current book as the screensaver – indeed there aren’t any alternatives, so if you disable this option you just get a blank screen with ‘Sleeping’ or ‘Power off’ at the bottom. We habitually swap hands, and after prolonged use would probably choose to keep things this way even if another option was presented. Now, we can see why the makers wanted to allow users to switch from left- to righthand use very easily, even if landscape mode was not wanted. But locked mode, while preventing portrait mode from switching 90 degrees to landscape, still allows the device to rotate the full 180 degrees, and it’s so sensitive that it often flips upside-down when you put the device down on the table. It can be used in either portrait or landscape orientation (the latter designed to have the grip at the bottom), and there’s an option to ‘lock’ this. We mentioned earlier that rotating the device automatically rotates the screen, but we have a slight reservation on that count. There’s a good range of text customisation options: 10 fonts, and the ability to fine-tune text size, margin size and line spacing to an enormously granular degree. Tap the central third of the screen to bring up menu options, including brightness, text size, and chapter quick jumps. Select something to read from the My Books menu, then navigate by either tapping on the left or right side of the screen, or using the top (back) and bottom (forward) buttons on the grip. As you would hope, the Forma is simple to use. Therefore, the user must decide which application is the most important for a specific task in order to determine the most compatible version of rechargeable batteries. Unfortunately, there are no batteries that are capable of encompassing all functions mentioned above. For long-term use (followed by discharging and charging), long storage time when not in use, remote activation, and use under harsh weather conditions are just a few obstacles of creating such secondary cells. This disequilibrium is the representation of the cell potential that, when allowed, could once again approach equilibrium through the transferring of the electrons.ĭifferent secondary batteries provide various functions. (Remember: Anode is the electrode on which oxidation takes place, i.e., loss of electrons and cathode is the electrode on which reduction takes place i.e., gain. This makes it seem like the positive charges are compiling on the other side of the cell which is not allowed to pass the separator. The Charger shown on the top of the diagram is pulling the negative charges toward the right side of the separator. The positive: PbO2 + 2 + HSO4 - e + 3 h + PbSO4 + 2 h2o. The figure below illustrates the mechanism of a charging secondary cell. The lead storage battery is made up of a group of lead-bismuth alloy grids filled with spongy metal lead, and the other group is made of lead-bismuth alloy grid filled with alumina. To simulate lead-acid battery (LAB) charging has never been an easy task due to the influences of: (1) secondary reactions that involve gas evolution and recombination and grid corrosion, (2. Secondary cells encompass the same mechanism as the primary cells with the only difference being that the Redox reaction of the secondary cell could be reversed with sufficient amount of energy placed into the equation. You have the copy of filezilla from the Ubuntu repository that is for a 32 bit architecture where I have the same thing, but for a 64 bit arch (unless you've done configuration I haven't checked out, ftp at command line is same) is a "clear-text" protocol with no encryption. So is that Windows 7 home, pro, student, server? The non Server editions of MS Windows XP that I checked out had hard limits of 10 simultaneous connections just as some or other source made me think to check - it's been a while and I sort of wish I hadn't mentioned it. The specific error message given is solely a message from the server - the client has connected the maximum allowable per individual client and requested another connection and that should be the only reason to get this error. So basically it's still a filezilla bug? That I cannot limit number of connections? I use Windows 7 at the moment, but Windows Vista and Windows XP used to work with the very same servers just as fine.įilezilla not sure where aptitude downloads it from, the package is named filezilla_3.3.1-1ubuntu2_b. Now I didn't know OS can or does limit connection for FTP clients, though I suspected as much after I started getting this error. It's very likely it's an understatement :) Nevertheless, I must use them and I cannot change their configuration :( And since it's possible in Windows, I hope there's a way to make it work with Linux clients too. Yes, based on my previous experience with these servers and their admins, it's very likely they aren't brilliantly configured. I'm going to suggest that the FTP Server in question isn't actually all that brilliantly configuredĪctually there are 2 of them I use frequently, and I get this error with both of them. Are you using FileZilla from Ubuntu Software Centre in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS? I don't think I even looked at those settings when I first grabbed FileZilla. I went and had a poke through my copy of FileZilla and found that the current settings are tamely 'Maximum simultaneous transfers: (1-10). Sorry I am not telling you anything very clever that will fix it for you: Set up a Windows VM and run filezilla in there if you can't correct that FTP server. Please tell me what version of Windows it is you have there - if it's not a server edition and it precedes Windows 7 then it's very likely got the '10 internet sockets' hard limit - I can't speak for Windows 7 but I bet MS still thinks the average home user (including professional) should never need more than 10 sockets and it's probably an internet attack if they ask for them! I'm going to suggest that the FTP Server in question isn't actually all that brilliantly configured and just because you are probably using an edition of Windows that has a hard limit of 10 simultaneous internet connections doesn't make it Linux's fault for granting the 'calling program' as many internet sockets as it asks for, at least to a much a greater limit than the people at MS thought certain editions of their stuff should have. I've had to deselect stuff named with terminology like "Limit connections from individual clients" in both an MS FTP setup and ProFTPD, although it might be an FTP server awfully like ProFTP that I used in CentOS upon a time that I can't find a reference to right now! I configured 3 of the four FTP servers myself and the fourth is configured by someone that I know 'knows about as good as I do'. I use filezilla in both Linux and Windows and I don't get your error, ever. I contact several different FTP servers every week and I sometimes transfer hundreds of files to or from them. and this happens with many different FTP servers. Connection is refused for separate particular files, if I click "Ignore" each time the rest of files are transfered perfectly well, so I assume it's the very same error.Īnything I could do? This really drives me mad, transfering large numbers of files is a part of my everyday job. When I try to use native ftp client (not sure how is it called, the one in Places -> Connect to a server) I get abstract "connection refused" error every time I transfer large number of files. I did try to switch between passive and active modes (not sure if it's related at all, just last desperate attempt), and it didnt change anything either. I did try to limit maximum allowed connections for Filezilla, both in server settings and in global settings, it didnt change anything. At first I thought it's a filezilla bug, however I get the same error basically with every FTP client I've tried, including Total Commander under Wine. I keep getting the "sorry, the maximum allowed clients from your host (10) are already connected" error whenever I try to transfer a large number of files. Compared with Final Cut Pro, it has intuitive user interface, broad format support and other advantages. Generally speaking, it includes all features of Movavi Video Editor, video converter, screen recorder, video cutter, photo editor, DVD burner, and more. Instead, the money moves from producers of polluting fuels to producers of clean energy, making the cleaner fuels cheaper. pump priceĪnd the federal government itself won't collect a dime from the regulations. Oil refiners want cost of reducing their carbon footprint rolled into N.S.New fuel regulations will increase price of fuel and decrease GDP: budget watchdog.Atlantic premiers want federal government to postpone new clean fuel rules."It's like a cap-and-trade system for intensity as opposed to absolute emissions," said Jaccard. The regulations actually work more like a cap-and-trade system, which provincial governments used well before the federal carbon tax. "It's almost like a carbon tax, but it doesn't put the charge on every litre, so it can do more to encourage efficiency or fuel switching toward low carbon fuels or low carbon electricity without having the same price impacts on the fuel itself," said climate economist Mark Jaccard, a professor at Simon Fraser University and an expert on clean fuel standards. The Clean Fuel Regulations work differently, since they only penalize the dirtiest fuels. A carbon tax imposes a surcharge on every litre of fuel based on its carbon content. Given how much each tonne of carbon costs society in increased climate warming, the government calculates that it's a good bargain. The government estimates that by 2040, the regulations will have cut emissions by around 200 million tonnes at a cost to GDP of $30 billion. The economic cost will be a hit to GDP of roughly $9 billion and a cut to emissions of about 27 million tonnes in 2030, says an ECCC regulatory impact analysis. That's on top of the 37 cents the carbon tax will add to a litre of gasoline by 2030. The Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) predicts a price increase of 17 cents per litre. It estimates a price increase at the pumps by 2030 of anywhere between six and 13 cents per litre for gasoline, depending on how refineries comply. The federal government says it doesn't think consumers will notice any added costs right away.Įnvironment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says the regulations' impact on gas prices will be "minimal" for the next few years - since producers should be able to meet the standards by taking steps they probably would have taken anyway.ĮCCC predicts that by 2030, consumers should see some added costs when filling their tanks, although the department isn't certain how big the price bump will be. The new Clean Fuel Regulations come into force on July 1 but refineries will have a year to comply. It's also possible for others to earn credits through investments in, for example, electric vehicle charging stations, and to sell those credits to fuel producers. Other producers can buy those credits if their fuels fall short. Producers that come in below the federal government's emissions intensity ceiling will earn extra credits they can sell. They could put more ethanol in their gasoline, use more biodiesel or find innovative ways of reducing their refineries' emissions through, for example, carbon capture and storage. Producers could comply with the new rules in different ways. By 2030, the rules will require a 15 per cent cut in emissions intensity compared to 2016 levels. The goal is to push companies that produce or import fuel to gradually reduce the emissions intensity of that process by setting a ceiling and dropping it each year. Unlike the current rules, the new ones cover the entire life cycle of fuels, from production and transport to consumption. The new regulations are meant to cut the "carbon intensity" of automotive fuels sold on the Canadian market - how much they generate in emissions for a given amount of energy. Starting July 1, a new regime will replace those rules. (Kirk Fraser/CBC)įederal regulations already require a minimum percentage of biofuels in gasoline and diesel. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says the regulations could have a 'disproportionate impact' on some parts of the country. |
